"This is a solid comic! Simonson's art is just fantastic and his page layouts are excellent! It's a great story with a nice pace too. I like the characters a lot as well as the whole atmosphere of the setting. Good dialogue that isn't pandering or exaggerated. If I had to find something I didn't like about the comic it would be the coloring (being that I really do not like modern coloring), but even still that is done really well too.

I recommend getting the hard cover version! Its printed larger than the average comic and the cover itself is so very nice! As soon as I took my copy out of the package I knew I made a great purchase. The printing is great and the design of the book is excellent.

Even if you are not a fan of the Marvel Thor or have never read it (like myself), I think you will still enjoy this. It is really refreshing to read a creator-owned piece like this. Walt is a great storyteller, writer and illustrator."

Ragnarok Vol 1 Last God Standing Walter Simonson Books Reviews

  • Walt Simonson's five-year run on Thor raised the bar for epic action, culminating in an all-splash page issue where Thor took on the Midgard Serpent. Later his run on Orion brought that New God warrior to new heights. But both books were marred by their corporate origins, when he was finished Simonson had to restore the status quo for the next writer.

Now Simonson has returned to Thor in a creator-owned book without that limit, and it is glorious.

Before I picked it up I was a little worried Ragnarok would feel like a retread of Simonson's earlier work but he takes Thor in daring new directions that would be impossible in a Disney/Marvel comic. For starters the book is set well after Ragnarok, and Thor is... well... dead.

But you can't keep a good thunder god down!

So if you liked the Thor films (which are filled with touches from Simonson's comics) or Simonson's other work this is a great book to pick up.
  • I've been fanatical about Walt "Dino" Simonson since the back of those thick Detective Comics, decades past. I've gleefully followed his extraordinary volume of creativity, both in story and art. I missed Ragnarok when it first came out. Thankfully, I found this collection while doing my holiday browsing.

Since he's already proven his mettle on gods before, either old (Thor) or new (Orion), I jumped at the opportunity to see him given free reign to his creative vision, unbridled from existing canon of any established character.

Despite my high expectations and anticipation, the book exceeds my hopes. It's a fascinating tale of a post-Ragnarok world where Thor is in fact (apparently) the only god left "alive" (that term could be debated).

In lesser and more traditional hands, that would be the story right there, Thor's quest for revenge. But this is Walt Simonson unleashed!

The books begin with Dark Elves, interweaving a fascinating family with a unique child. The introduction of Thor doesn't even happen until well into the first issue. Concurrently, there is the architect of the disaster, Surtur, who feels a gnawing dread that something is amiss in his dusky world.

Interspersed between these connected tales are flashbacks to the actual Ragnarok, each succeeding scene revealing more of the happenstance and antagonists of the destruction of the gods.

The story is expertly paced, with quick, clean dialog. The art is classic Simonson, dramatic, electric and eye-popping. His long-time buddy John Workman is along for the lettering, so you can count on those awesome sound effects trademark to great Simonson sagas of the past.

Like any great work, the ending of this book (Issue 6 in the numbering), leaves you thirsty for more of the story. The questions are many, the anticipation is great and the possibilities, especially given the creator, are limitless.

This is a story that all comics and fantasy fans should and need to pick up!

  • I first encountered Walt Simonson’s artwork in the early 1970’s and in one of his -and Archie Goodwin’s- Manhunter chapters in the pages of Detective Comics (100 Page Spectaculars!).

I loved his work then (if you haven’t read the complete Manhunter saga, do yourself a favor and hunt it down. Now!) and he just seems to get better and better.

Ragnarok is his return to Norse mythology and the character of Thor. However, this isn’t the Marvel Thor he so wonderfully took on a few years back. This is the Thor of the mythology and the story itself concerns events after the Gods have fallen.

It is an intriguing and wonderful read and, repeating myself here, if you are a fan of Mr. Simonson and haven’t read this, do yourself a favor and hunt it down.

As for me, I’m heading to Volume 2!
  • For ambiance and setting, Walter Simonson has built a strongly interesting world projecting on norse mythology in a way I have never seen before. Simonson does a good job texturing the world, setting up secondary protagonists, and making the tone highly stylized. This, however, is not a meta-fiction, it is not overly edgy, and the violence is not grim or "edgy." It is sword and sorcery and mythology in a post-apocalyptic world, but a completely different apocalypse than the one we are normally exposed to.
  • Outstanding visuals, amazing storytelling, and a gripping story arc are the dim praises I can sing for Ragnarok Vol. 1. Few recent stories Thor have hit all the great elements while incorporating a reinvigorated mythos. There are a few downsides a handful of sketch pages litter the between book pages. While not distracting and more than a little awe inspiring can break the action at just the wrong moment. However being a 181 page comic book that's a price ill pay again. At a beggars price of $3.99 USD you're more than getting your money's worth. All in all you can't ask for more out of a Volume it delivers on a chilling beginning an informative yet interesting middle and an action packed end. Do yourself the favor buy this book.
